Math Proof Drawings

Dear Parents,

You may have noticed your child doing some drawings for math. We have been learning how to do them to facilitate understanding of addition, subtraction and place value. The goal is to do the problems the normal way we are all used to, yet understanding the value of each number in its place. The 2 in 12,354 is not just a two, it is two thousand. Mr. Bowen, a third grade teacher at Georgetown made a video explaining the drawings for addition. Click on the link if you would like to understand this procedure. (One of the methods shows carrying the number to the line below. I explained this, but I am not encouraging this method.)

Julia Thinks I Am Silly!!

Julia is my granddaughter. We have lots of fun together and she thinks I am silly. She lives on Whidbey Island in the state of Washington. When we are together, we have tea parties, read books, and play silly games. Last summer my husband and I took Julia and her brother Levi camping. Julia loved to do the dishes at our campsite. Funding Crisis

Time is running out. Our Governor and legislative leaders in Lansing are proposing devastating cuts to public education. In addition to the $165 per pupil cut to all public schools, the State Budget Director has notified school leaders another $127 per pupil cut is coming in less than 30 days. The only way this will not happen is if our Governor and legislators can agree to a funding solution addressing the revenue shortfall. It is called maptron.com Once you are there, click on the “solutions” tab. Then choose USA select state game. You can choose the easy game or the difficult game. Interview with Diary of a Wimpy Kid author

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a very popular series. They are rarely on the shelves in our classroom library or the school library. Instead, they are in the hands of students who are eagerly reading them with a smile on their face. I was on my way home from school the other day when I heard the NPR radio broadcaster asking for questions from kids to ask Jeff Kinney, author of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. She was going to be interview him the next day. I was so disappointed that I would not have a chance to submit questions from my students before the interview. Book Blog

Jared York has written another book blog. Reading it makes me want to read the book. How about you?

My name is Jared and the book I read was the Mystery/Crime book titled The Million Dollar Strike by Dan Gutman. I chose this book because I like bowling and I like mysteries too!!! My favorite part was when the two kids made up the million dollar strike contest. I also like the part when the owner allowed two kids to add the following things to his bowling alley: new glow-in-the-dark bowling shoes, two shiny mirrored disco balls, laser beams, pool tables, a high quality sound system and more! There is also this evil clown that shows up and he’s trying to destroy the bowling alley! NOW, IT’S YOUR TURN TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!!!!

“Oh Here I Go a Wandering”

You can call me the “Happy Hiker!” I am Mrs. Boersma and I love to hike. This past summer my husband and I went to Mt. Rainier in the state of Washington. We took a five mile hike up and around this mountain (not to the top!!). It actually felt good to hike through the snow as it was at least 80 degrees outside. The wildflowers were everywhere and very beautiful. We also spend a lot of time walking the streets of Holland, and the forests and beaches of the area. I love to hike because it is great exercise and I love to be outside observing nature. This photo is part of the October Blog Scavenger Hunt.
